thumb Michael M. Richter ( * June 21, 1938 in Berlin) is a German mathematician and computer scientist. Richter is well known for his career in mathematical logic, in particular non-standard analysis, and in artificial intelligence, in particular in knowledge-based systems and case-based reasoning (CBR, Fallbasiertes Schließen). He is worldwide known as pioneer in case-based reasoning. == Life == Richter is born in an educated family. His father is Dr. Paul Kurt Richter. He was a literary scientist. His grandfather is Dr. Carl Greiff. He was a medical scientist. He wrote a 544 pages book in 1940 called Diabetes-probleme and the publisher of the book was Verlag Johann Ambrosius Bath. Richter studied mathematics 1959–1965 at the University of Münster and the University of Freiburg, where he completed his Ph.D. on Mathematical Logic under the supervision of Walter Felscher and he performed his ''Habilitation'' in 1973 in Mathematics at the University of Tübingen. After teaching at the University of Texas at Austin he was Professor for Mathematics at the RWTH Aachen from 1975 to 1986. 1986 he accepted a chair for Computer Science at the University of Kaiserslautern where he was teaching until his retirement in 2003. He was several times teaching at Austin, Florianopolis and Calgary. He was also teaching at the University of St. Gallen from 1994 to 2000 on Decision Support and Operations Research. Presently he is Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary and Visiting Professor at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil. In this time 64 students completed their PhD thesis and 293 students their diploma and masters thesis under his supervision. Many of them now hold professorships in various parts of the world. He is the author of 9 books. His recent book is Case-Based Reasoning: A Textbook. The publisher of the book is Springer Verlag. His son Peter P. Richter who is born in 1976 is a geologist. He has earned his doctoral degree in geology from the University of Mainz. Currently his son is employed at the University of Kiel. Richter goes running and plays chess in his spare time.
